Murakami Versailles



In a previous post I discussed Jeff Koons at Versailles. I quoted Authur Danto who had explained that in aesthetic appreciation there is a full spectrum of beauty that includes the ugly. This is sort of commonplace post modern thinking but it is crystalized by the presentation of contemporary art in classical surroundings. In the current exhibition we are exposed to a clash of beauty - modern pop in decadent grandeur. Murakami looks out of place amid Versailles' magnificence which suddenly seems antiquated and oppressive.


With the Murakami exhibition there is also the aspect of east and west. The Japanese artist with a colorful vitality is positioned in a sedate and discreet color palette crowed in gold. It is somehow in the reflective bling these two otherwise incompatible styles find harmony.
